چکیده

We study the short-term evolution of starspots on the ultrafast-rotating star HD197890 (“Speedy Mic” = BO Mic, K 0-2V, Prot = 0.380 d) based on two Doppler images taken about 13 stellar rotations apart. Each image is based on spectra densely sampling a single stellar rotation. The images were reconstructed by our Doppler imaging code CLDI (Clean-like Doppler imaging) from line profiles extracted by spectrum deconvolution. Our Doppler images constructed from two independent wavelength ranges agree well on scales down to 10◦ on the stellar surface. In conjunction with nearly parallel V-band photometry our observations reveal a significant evolution of the spot pattern during as little as two stellar rotations. We suggest that such a fast spot evolution demands care when constructing Doppler images of highly active stars based on spectral time series extending over several stellar rotations. The fast intrinsic spot evolution on BO Mic impedes the determination of a surface differential rotation; in agreement with earlier results by other authors we determine an upper limit of |α| < 0.004 ± 0.002.

The highly spotted photosphere of the young rapid rotator Speedy Mic

We present high resolution images of the young rapidly rotating K3 dwarf Speedy Mic (BO Mic, HD 197890). The photospheric spot maps reveal a heavily and uniformly spotted surface from equatorial to high latitude regions. Contrary to many images of similar objects, Speedy Mic does not possess a uniform filling at high latitudes, but exhibits structure in the polar regions showing greatest concen...

The coronal structure of Speedy Mic - II : Prominence masses and off - disc emission

Observations of stellar prominences on young rapidly rotating stars provide unique probes of their magnetic fields out to many stellar radii. We compare two independently obtained datasets of the K3 dwarf Speedy Mic (BO Mic, HD 197890) using the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). Taken more than a fortnight apart they provide the first insight into the evol...

Astrometric and Spectroscopic Confirmation of a Brown Dwarf Companion to GSC 08047-00232⋆ VLT/NACO deep imaging and spectroscopic observations

We report VLT/NACO imaging observations of the stars GSC 08047-00232 and HIP 6856, probable members of the large Tucana-Horologium association. During our previous ADONIS/SHARPII deep imaging survey, a substellar candidate companion was discovered around each star. Based on VLT/NACO astrometric measurements, we find that GSC08047-00232 and the faint candidate companion near to it share the same...

Star Formation Histories, Abundances and Kinematics of Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Group

Within the Local Universe galaxies can be studied in great detail star by star, and here we review the results of quantitative studies in nearby dwarf galaxies. The Color-Magnitude Diagram synthesis method is well established as the most accurate way to determine star formation history of galaxies back to the earliest times. This approach received a large boost from the exceptional data sets th...

Direct imaging search for planetary companions next to young nearby stars

We report first results from our ground-based infrared imaging search for sub-stellar companions (brown dwarfs and giant planets) of young (up to 100 Myrs) nearby (up to 75 pc) stars, where companions should be well separated from the central stars and still relatively bright due to ongoing accretion and/or contraction. Among our targets are all members of the TW Hya association, as well as oth...
